  7. NOTES: If you have an old work unit in progress which has 
  8. been partially analyzed by a different version of SETI@home, 
  9. this installation will preserve the work unit, but will 
  10. discard any analysis done so far.  It will restart processing 
  11. the work unit from the beginning (i.e., zero percent complete). 
  12.  
  13. SETI@home's data files have been renamed from *.txt to 
  14. *.sah.

  18. Internet Connection Retries
  19. -------------------------------------------
  20. The new facility to automatically retry Internet
  21. connections may not work unless a recent version of
  22. Internet Explorer has also been installed.  IE versions 
  23. 4 and later work; we have not tested older versions.
  24.  
  25. Note that the automatic retry feature only works 
  26. if you have set SETI@home preferences to connect 
  27. automatically.  Otherwise, you must select "connect 
  28. now" to retry.
  29.

  32. section in the help file for details.

  39. Moving SETI@home's Data Files
  40. ----------------------------------------------------
  41. Due to our new security measures to prevent falsified
  42. results, it is best to treat all the data files as a unit.  If
  43. for any reason you must move or copy the data files, be
  44. sure to move them all together.  The files affected include
  45. key.sah, state.sah, outfile.sah, result_header.sah,
  46. work_unit.sah and result.sah (not all of these will exist at
  47. any one time).  You need not move user_info.sah,
  48. version.sah or "SETI@home ReadMe" together with the
  49. others.
  50.  
  51. Some users download work units and return results from
  52. one computer, but process different work units on
  53. different machines, or save them for later processing on
  54. the same computer.  If the computers are all of the same
  55. type and are all running the same version of SETI@home,
  56. then the procedure above will work.  
  57.  
  58. As an alternative, you may move only work_unit.sah or
  59. result.sah between different computers running
  60. SETI@home.  If you move only work_unit.sah,
  61. SETI@home will delete and reinitialize the other files, so
  62. the work unit will be processed starting at the beginning.
  63.  
  64. If you move only result.sah to a different computer, that 
  65. SETI@home client will send the result to the server and 
  66. then continue processing of its work unit (if it has one).
  67.  
  68. IMPORTANT: Be sure to completely exit from
  69. SETI@home (by right-clicking on its icon in the System
  70. Tray and selecting Exit from the pop-up menu) before
  71. moving files.  Selecting Exit from the maximized
  72. application's File Menu or Close Box does _not_
  73. completely exit.

  75. The SETI@home screensaver will automatically restart
  76. the application when it kicks in, or you may restart it in
  77. the usual way by double-clicking SETI@home.exe.

  81. What happened to the Peak Power and Best Gaussian meters?
  82. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  83. The old Peak Power and Best Gaussian values on the display 
  84. have been replaced by a graph.  We found that the highest 
  85. power peaks were due to radio interference from earth or 
  86. satellites, so we have replaced that info with a new 
  87. display which graphically shows how well the data fits 
  88. the shape of a gaussian curve.  
  89.  
  90. While performing calculations other than curve fitting, the 
  91. display shows the best Gaussian fit so far.  To save time, 
  92. SETI@home does curve fitting only when a pass through the 
  93. data merits further study.  This means that the Gaussian 
  94. display will remain blank until "interesting" data is found.  
  95. For some work units, the data will not cause any Gaussian 
  96. curve fitting at all.

  100. Why are we requiring you to upgrade to SETI@home 2.0?
  101. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  102. Before answering this question, we want to say thank you
  103. to our users (over a million of you!).  You have made
  104. history with this, the largest distributed computing project
  105. ever, with more processing power than any
  106. supercomputer ever built.
  107.  
  108. Unfortunately, there are a few individuals who have
  109. caused us problems.  Some of them have been altering
  110. the data files to make it appear that they have found the
  111. highest values, so they can see their names on our web
  112. site.  Not only is this fraudulent, but it threatens the
  113. integrity of the project.  
  114.  
  115. SETI@home is, after all, a scientific research project. 
  116. While we will eventually screen out bogus results by
  117. reprocessing the interesting work units ourselves, this
  118. form of hacking hurts our project in many ways.
  119.  
  120. In addition, some persons have altered the SETI@home
  121. client software to use faster math routines.  While their
  122. intentions may be honorable (faster computing means
  123. more data processed), the scientific integrity of this
  124. project requires that the same processing be applied to
  125. all data uniformly.  Since we can not verify that the
  126. results of these altered versions match those of the
  127. originals, they are a cause for significant concern.
  128.  
  129. Due to the actions of a tiny percentage of our users, we
  130. have been forced to add protection against this sort of
  131. hacking.  This is the main reason we must refuse to send
  132. new work units to older versions of the SETI@home
  133. clients.

  135. We apologize for the inconvenience, but find this to be
  136. necessary to protect the investment of you, our
  137. legitimate users in this project.
  138.  
  139. Version 2.0 also fixes many bugs.
  140.  
  141. We understand that during the transition, there will be a
  142. heavy load on our servers for downloading the new
  143. software.  Please be patient and keep trying; the quality
  144. of the science will greatly benefit from the upgrade.

  148. Bug fixes and new features in Windows v 2.04:

  150. - Fixed a potential divide by zero error.
  151. - Installer automatically closes old client if running.
  152. - Fixed start menu short cut to help file.
  153. - Properly show 100% progress when work unit complete.
  154. - Synchronize output files when computer is shut down; 
  155. this fixes one cause of progress occasionally being 
  156. reset to zero.
  157. - Don't accumulate CPU time when computer is in low-
  158. power hibernate or standby mode.
  159. - Use multithread-safe libraries for better stability.
  160. - Changing "always run" option takes immediate effect.
  161. - When relaunching client, show progress and elapsed 
  162. CPU time before doing baseline smoothing.

  196. the format of HTTP headers.

  198. "can't create file" bug when used with SETISpy, SETIWatch

  203. Bug fixes and new features in Windows v 2.0 since 1.06:

  205. - Improved network retries.  If SETI@home fails to
  206. establish network connection, it retries twice at
  207. 45-second intervals. If the retries still fail, it 
  208. restarts the sequence after a 15 or 60 minute delay 
  209. (only if Connect Automatically is set). This should 
  210. help clients whose system is slow connecting to the 
  211. Internet. (Retries may not work unless version 4 or 
  212. later of Internet Explorer has been installed).
  213. - Better reporting of connection errors.
  214. - Better network protocol for updating user's totals at
  215. client when client sends results to server.
  216. - Enhanced support for Internet connections through
  217. HTTP and SOCKS  proxies.
  218. - Improved validity checking, to reject corrupted or
  219. tampered files.
  220. - Server can send messages to be displayed by client.
  221. - Better numeric error detection.
  222. - Client returns power array summary for Gaussians.
  223. - File access retries for compatibility with ScanDisk,
  224. Defrag and FastFind.  This may also give sleeping hard
  225. drives time  to spin up.
  226. - Fixed minor bugs in measuring elapsed CPU time.
  227. - Miscellaneous improvements in drawing efficiency.
  228. - More reliable display of icon in System Tray.
